Director of literacy and numeracy instruction

Chemonics seeks a director of literacy and numeracy instruction for the anticipated USAID/South Sudan Education for Peace, Recovery, and Resilience Activity (EPRR). This potential three-year program will expand access to learning opportunities in a safe and protective learning environment while reinforcing resilience efforts and recovery trends for the youth most affected by conflict. The goals of the program will be to increase access to equitable learning opportunities for boys and girls, improve learning outcomes through enhanced literacy and numeracy instruction, enhance recovery and resilience through psychosocial support and peace building activities, and increase the capacity of communities to support education and increase ownership to maintain the facilities. The position is based in Juba. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership, management, and technical direction for the enhanced literacy and numeracy aspects of the project
  • Ensure appropriate implementation of program strategy as it relates to improved learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy
  • Develop and conduct teacher trainings for literacy and numeracy instruction
  • Design and oversee teachers’ professional development and capacity building activities
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of teacher incentive-based programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international development, education, or related field required; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a senior role on an early-grade reading and/or numeracy activity in a developing country environment and expertise in improving early-grade instruction
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in complex and challenging field operations in conflict or conflict-prone environments, preferably in Africa
  • Demonstrated leadership experience leading technical components of USAID-funded projects and experience with learning activity design and development and management of remote teams within donor-funded education projects
  • Capacity to understand and analyze national, regional, and local politics as they relate to EPRR’s ability to improve learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Recent experience and strong working knowledge of South Sudan required
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in written and oral English required
