Duties and Responsibilities:
Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:
Monitoring and Reporting
•Identify and monitor political developments and emerging issues with respect to the implementation of UNMISS’s mandate;
•Collect and interpret information contained in publications from various sources, including the press;
•Prepare summary and analytical reports including, but not limited to, situation reports, briefing notes and notes to file;
•Prepare and update contextual information materials, such as background notes and political profiles;
•Develop and/or maintain databases and other tools designed to ensure accessibility and utility of information; Manage correspondence;
•Manage information materials, ensuring their accessibility and utility;
•Translate documents from Arabic to English and vice versa, as needed;
Outreach and Coordination
•Provide support to the Mission’s political and media activities and efforts to ensure collaborative relationships with key partners, including the UN family; the authorities, political parties, civil society and other interlocutors;
•Assist with preparations for meetings and events, prepare written summaries and assist with follow-up activities, as appropriate;
•Perform other related duties as required.

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, economics, law, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of 2 years with a Master’s degree or equivalent or four years (with Bachelor’s Degree) of professional experience in political affairs, international relations, diplomacy, law, or related aspects of public policy, or public administration in an international,organization, government institution, or national civil society organization.
Good knowledge of constitutional law, related processes, and the South Sudan legal system will be a distinct asset.
Experience in preparing summary and analytical reports is required.
Fluency in English is a requirement. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the duty station is an asset.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Candidates for the National Professional Officer category shall be of the nationality of the country where this position is located.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
